doggie drama

another day in cassie drama land...


cassie got attacked by two neighborhood hound dogs about 10 days ago. she's on the mend and is in good spirits, but she has many stitches still in place.


we had just left the house on the fateful day when two large-ish hound dogs, being walked by two young kids, pulled their leashes free and charged cassie in a matter of seconds. after some frantic pulling, kicking, and who knows what else, the attacking dogs were pulled off, the kids were horrified and completely traumatized, and cassie was laying still on the street. she managed to get to her feet, but was shaking so badly that i carried her back to the house where she collapsed on the grass. 


she had a puncture wound in her back and wouldn't put any weight on her right front leg. after a bit of searching, i found the source of trouble for her right leg....several gashes that nearly encircled her entire leg. while i figured the puncture wound in her back would heal, these were not quite so pretty. so off we went for another traumatizing visit to the vet. 20-some stitches later, we were sent home with antibiotics, pain medication, elizabethan collar, and a sore dog with another funny shave-job.

now that the trauma and trickery of having pills shoved down her throat or badly hidden in her food, she is returning to her old self. she still favors her right leg, but has been going up and down the stairs mostly on her own in the last couple of days, which is a good sign. i'll miss the bicep and quad workout...

after getting cass settled, it was my turn. two days after she was attacked, another neighborhood dog decided to take a bite of MY leg! i couldn't make this stuff up if i tried. i have five small teeth punctures in my thigh, but fortunately i didn't have to take myself to the vet. what a week!

rain, rain, go away!

while we generally beg for more water in california, we have surpassed our average for the year and it is time to send the rain packing for a few months. it has been a wet week in the santa cruz mountains. today is the first day without rain in over a week. not just rain, torrential rain! since march 18th, we have had THIRTEEN inches of rain...5.5 inches in the last three days. the river gage, which we keep a very close eye on during heavy rains, looks like a see-saw these days. That red line on the graph indicates official flood stage for the san lorenzo river in our neighborhood and is also the river height when the fire department orders mandatory evacuations for us and our neighbors. we crossed that line on thursday afternoon (while i was flying home from south carolina) but the river level dropped before we got any water in our garage. a few neighbors had water in their yards, but nothing more than a nuisance. pete and cassie stayed put and evaluated the situation with the neighbors rather than leaving. living in a flood prone neighborhood definitely keeps you on your toes!



the roads around santa cruz did not fare so well in all these storms. we were nearly trapped in felton yesterday...three of our four routes to santa cruz were closed due to landslides and tree falls and the fourth was down to one lane. it took us an hour to drive five miles. had we known, grocery shopping could definitely have waited!


the forecast for the week is calling for dry, warm weather. welcome spring!

california may have ruined me...

i was in myrtle beach, south carolina, last week for a conference. based on the photographic evidence below, i think that that city (and maybe the whole state) has been crossed off the list of viable places to live. it may be less expensive than california, but i don't think it is worth it. and, oh the styrofoam and plastic bags... sigh.

consider that there was one of these stores every quarter
mile for a ten mile stretch...at least. heavy sigh...

the arboretum

last weekend marked my seemingly now annual trip to the arboretum on the university of california santa cruz campus. looking back at my photos from last year, my visits were 366 days apart...apparently my need to get out of the house and see flowers in bloom occurs with some regularity. last weekend was also the hummingbird festival at the arboretum and the birds did not disappoint! i was buzzed by a number of allen's hummingbirds as the males performed their spectacular mating flights and dives. it also proved to be an excellent opportunity to try out my new binoculars as the male's perched on the tops of trees to try to get the females to take notice. 


two of my favorite gardens at the arboretum - the australian and south african - were in bloom, but a bit behind where they were last year. nonetheless, it was a beautiful afternoon to spend amongst the hummingbirds and the flowers.

tide pools and coral reefs...kind of

i recently returned from a trip to D.C. for a scientific conference. on my last day in the city, i sauntered over to the smithsonian natural history museum. while there are many amazing exhibits in that museum, there was one reason for my visit...the crocheted coral reef exhibit! i had read about this exhibit a few months ago in smithsonian's magazine but had forgotten about it. during a particularly stark talk on the future of coral reefs, the speaker mentioned the exhibit...as in "hopefully this is not the only coral reef our children will know." i certainly hope that my nieces and nephews will get to snorkel and dive on many coral reefs in the future, but this exhibit was impressive nonetheless!

despite the cold front that blew through last weekend (see my poor bok choi below), the days were sunny and beautiful. pete left for washington on saturday morning so cassie and i took a field trip up the coast to the fitzgerald marine protected area just north of half moon bay. it had been a long, long time since i have been in the intertidal for fun...or at least without a quadrat and transect tape! i had a great time poking around the many tide pools and taking photos of the critters. cassie isn't allowed in the mpa so we went for a hike along the coastal trail in half moon bay after the tide came in. she managed to roll in a mud puddle, so i am pretty sure the day was a success from her view point as well. :)

all are safe...

initial reports suggest that all my friends and their families in christchurch, new zealand, are safe. the city and nearby areas were largely leveled, however, so their lives are a long way from normal. i will let you know if there is anything we can do to help them rebuild their lives.

an early spring?

it is hard to believe that i am sitting outside for the second weekend in a row in early february in a tank top and shorts. it is days like these when i realize that THIS is the california dream. with either foolish optimism or real belief that winter is on its way out, i planted the spring veggie seeds in the garden last weekend. the daffodils are blooming...so it must be time, right?! hopefully within 70-80 days we will be feasting on chard, beets, lettuce, spinach, carrots, and spring onions from our garden. the bok choi and cilantro starts have been going strong for a few weeks and are definitely enjoying the warm weather too. rain is in the forecast for this week, however, but we still need several more good rains this season to make it through the summer without severe water restrictions. not so much the california dream... 


this is one of my favorite times of year - the days are getting longer on both ends, trees are blooming everywhere, and the migratory birds are starting to come through.
